Chinese Traditional Culture Class

Kung Fu training without the guidance of Chinese philosophy is a tree without roots.
Strength may appear, but it cannot endure.

Traditional Chinese Kung Fu is not only a cultural expression — it is the one that speaks through the body itself. Through movement, posture, breath, and intention, philosophy becomes lived experience rather than abstract thought.

At Tianmeng, training is the study of culture made physical, where the principles of Chinese wisdom are embodied, refined, and carried forward through disciplined practice.

Chinese traditional culture is carried not only through words and texts, but through lived practice. At Tianmeng, culture is experienced as something embodied, cultivated, and expressed through daily life.

Traditional Chinese Kung Fu is one of the clearest reflections of this heritage, and the only cultural form that speaks fully through the body. Movement, posture, breath, and intention become a living language through which philosophy and wisdom are transmitted.

Alongside the core training in Traditional Kung Fu, Tai Chi Quan, and Qi Gong, Tianmeng offers optional evening classes that introduce students to broader expressions of Chinese tradition. These include calligraphy, Traditional Chinese Medicine, and tea culture — practices that refine attention, patience, and internal awareness.

Cultural classes are held in the evenings from Monday to Thursday, providing space for quiet study and reflection after physical training. Chinese philosophy classes are taught by Master Zhou, offering guidance into the principles that shape both martial practice and daily life.

Through these studies, students gain a deeper understanding of Chinese culture as an integrated system — one that unites body, mind, and spirit through disciplined practice.

Chinese traditional philosophy

Chinese traditional culture flows from ancient ways of understanding life and the natural world — 阴阳 (Yin–Yang), 五行 (Five Elements), and 八卦 (Bagua) — woven together with the wisdom of 道家 (Daoism), 儒家 (Confucianism), and 佛家 (Buddhism). These teachings offer a language for balance, change, and harmony between heaven, earth, and the human being.

From the 先天八卦 (Early Eight Diagrams) attributed to 伏羲 (Fuxi), the 《易经》 (Yì Jīng, Book of Changes) took form and was later refined by 周文王 (King Wen of the Zhou Dynasty). Within its lines are the earliest recorded expressions of Yin–Yang, the Five Elements, and the Bagua — principles that became the philosophical roots of both Daoism and Confucianism.

At Tianmeng, traditional Kung Fu is taught as a living continuation of this lineage. Philosophy is not held apart from practice, but revealed through movement, structure, breath, and intention. In this way, training becomes a quiet study of change, balance, and transformation — the true heart of our teaching.

The Way resides in the body; skill is realized through practice.

Chinese Traditional Medicine

In the study of Traditional Chinese Medicine, students are introduced to classical treatment methods such as cupping (拔罐 · bá guàn), therapeutic massage (推拿 · tuī ná), and moxibustion (艾灸 · ài jiǔ), alongside the foundational theories and treatment principles that guide their application.

Drawing from the wisdom of Huangdi Neijing (*《黄帝内经》 · Huáng Dì Nèi Jīng), attributed to 黄帝 (Huáng Dì), the Yellow Emperor, this study is rooted in the dynamic balance of 阴阳 (Yīn–Yáng) and the cyclical transformations of the 五行 (Wǔ Xíng · Five Elements). These principles reveal how health arises through harmony between the body, the seasons, and the natural world.

Students explore how the regulation of 气 (Qì), alignment with seasonal rhythms, and balance among the Five Elements support vitality, resilience, and long-term wellness. Treatment is understood not as forceful intervention, but as guidance toward the body’s natural capacity to restore equilibrium.

Through this tradition, Chinese medicine is practiced not only as a method of healing, but as a way of living in accordance with the 道 (Dào)  cultivating balance, clarity, and longevity through mindful practice.

顺应自然,调和阴阳。
Follow nature; harmonize Yin and Yang.

Tea ceremony

Tea, 茶 (chá), has followed a long and quiet journey from wild plant, to medicinal herb, to culinary seasoning, and finally to a daily drink. Throughout Chinese history, tea has played an essential role in everyday life, shaping moments of reception, reflection, and shared presence.

More than a beverage, tea is a way of relating. It carries values of respect, attentiveness, and calm enjoyment, and has long been central to Chinese hospitality and social ritual.

At Tianmeng, students are introduced to the art of tea through 茶道 (Chá Dào · the Way of Tea). Instruction includes the traditional tea-making ceremony, an understanding of tea history, varieties, and functions, as well as the etiquette of receiving and serving guests through tea. Through this practice, patience is refined, awareness is sharpened, and simplicity is honored.

一盏清茶,心自安然。
With a single cup of clear tea, the heart naturally settles.

Caligraphy

Linyi is the birthplace of Wang Xizhi, China’s most revered master of calligraphy, 书法 (shū fǎ). In this region, the spirit of writing is deeply rooted, and the atmosphere of calligraphic practice continues to shape daily life and study.

Like Kung Fu training, calligraphy unfolds through time, patience, and quiet repetition. Each stroke is guided by steady posture, controlled breath, and focused intention. Progress is not forced, but cultivated through consistent practice and attentive refinement.

Inner peace, 心静 (xīn jìng), is essential to the study of calligraphy. When the mind is settled, movement becomes precise and expressive. In this way, calligraphy and martial arts share the same foundation — discipline grounded in stillness, and strength shaped by calm awareness.

心静则笔稳,日久见真功。
When the mind is still, the brush is steady; with time, true skill is revealed.

Archery

Archery, 射艺 (shè yì), is one of the 六艺 (Liù Yì · Six Arts) required in ancient Chinese education — a discipline cultivated to refine character, perception, and embodied discipline. It was not taught merely as a skill of combat, but as a practice of alignment between body, mind, and intention.

Traditional weapons such as the staff (棍 · gùn) and sword (剑 · jiàn) are understood as extensions of the arms, guided by structure and awareness. Archery goes one step further. The bow becomes an extension of the weapon itself, demanding stillness, precision, and unified intent before action is released.

In modern life, the practice of archery offers quiet and powerful benefits. It strengthens the body, sharpens coordination, refines posture, and trains the eyes to focus with calm accuracy. More importantly, it teaches patience, restraint, and clarity — qualities often lost in hurried movement.

Through archery, students learn that true aim begins within, and that power is most effective when guided by stillness.

心正则矢直,意定而中。
When the mind is upright, the arrow flies true; when intention is settled, the target is met.
